If you’re curious about whether Betta fish have teeth, this post is for you. We’re going to discuss whether or not Betta have teeth and if they can bite.
Let’s dive in!
Do Betta Have Teeth?
Yes, Betta fish do have teeth!
If you look into a Betta fish’s mouth, you will see rows of tiny teeth. But, these teeth are so small that you may not see them straight away.
So, if you don’t see them, don’t worry. They’re definitely there!
A good tip if you really must see your Betta’s teeth is to take a picture of its mouth with your phone, then blow the picture up so you can see. It’s really cool to look at!
Are Betta Teeth Sharp?
Betta teeth are very sharp.
You see, Betta are carnivores. In the wild, they eat insects and insect larvae.
They need these sharp teeth to rip apart the food they consume.
Another reason Betta need sharp teeth is for fighting. (After all, they aren’t called “Siamese Fighting Fish” for nothing!)
Betta Splendens is a very aggressive species, so they use their sharp teeth not just for eating, but also for fighting and showing displays of strength and dominance.
For this reason, you’ll often find advice to avoid pairing two male Betta fish in the same tank.
In fact, it’s often best to house Betta fish alone.
If you do choose to build a community tank, you’d need to do your research on suitable Betta tank mates.
Will Betta Fish Bite Your Finger?
Whether betta fish bites your finger depends on the temperament of your fish.
While Betta Splendens is an aggressive breed, that doesn’t mean all Betta fish are the same.
If you stick your hand in the tank, some Betta will bite, but others are a bit more relaxed and would leave you alone.
You can test whether your Betta will bite by putting something else in the tank, like a small stick, for example, and see if they attack it.
If A Betta Bites, Will It Hurt?
If you do get bitten by a Betta, it may hurt a little, but because a Betta fish is so small compared to humans, it wouldn’t cause serious pain.
In fact, the bite wouldn’t even be strong enough to break human skin.
So, for an average adult, there’s nothing to worry about in terms of feeling intense pain from a Betta bite.
But a small child would likely experience discomfort.
As a rule of thumb, it’s best to make sure kids don’t stick their hands in Betta tanks.
Why Would A Betta Bite?
There are many reasons why your Betta fish might bite and here are a few of them:
- They’re curious — you put something new into their tank and they want to see what it is
- They’re afraid — your hand is this huge, foreign object randomly dropped into their tank. They are afraid and want to defend themselves
- By accident — if you’re hand-feeding food to your Betta, it may bite you by mistake in the process of eating
- They’re stressed — if you have an incorrect Betta tank setup, you may have a chronically stressed-out fish that is always on the defensive. This fish is likely to bite
